Hairspray cleans up at theatre awardsWest End hit musical Hairspray has continued its run of success, taking seven accolades at the Theatregoers' Choice Awards.

The show was announced as the winner in categories including best musical actress, for the performance by Leanne Jones as Tracy Turnblad, and best musical actor for Michael Ball, who plays Tracy's mother Edna.

Hairspray was not the only big winner in the awards, which were voted for by 25,000 people on Whatsonstage.com, as play Equus won three gongs, including best London newcomer for Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe.

The honour for best musical revival was handed to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, while Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Maggie Smith and Lee Evans were all recognised for their stage performances.

Awards will be handed out at a ceremony at the Lyric Theatre in London on February 24th.
