Hairspray continues to impress awards judges
West-end musical Hairspray has continued to prove popular with awards judging panels after receiving 11 nominations for the 2008 Laurence Olivier Awards.This is a record for the most nominations received by one production in a single year, according to the London Theatre Guide.
Hairspray was shortlisted in categories including best new musical, best set design and best sound design, while female lead Leanne Jones was nominated for the best actress in a musical award.
Shakespearean productions dominated the best actor category, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart being put forward for their roles as Othello, King Lear and Macbeth respectively.
Boeing Boeing and The Seagull were among the nominees in the best revival section, while Saint Joan's Anne-Marie Duff and Happy Days star Fiona Shaw were both on the shortlist for the best actress award.
The winners will be revealed at the 32nd Laurence Olivier Awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel on March 9th.
