Hairspray takes two theatre awards

Hairspray takes two theatre awardsPopular west-end musical Hairspray has been honoured with two Critics' Circle Theatre Awards.

The results of the 2008 awards were announced on January 29th, with Hairspray taking the Peter Hepple award for best musical.

Leanne Jones, who plays lead character Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray, received the Jack Tinker award for the most promising newcomer.

Another performer who was recognised by the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards was Charles Dance, who took the best actor accolade for his turn in Shadowlands at the Novello Theatre.

Shadowlands, which also stars Janie Dee, relates the true story of the relationship between author CS Lewis and American poet and writer Joy Gresham.

Other winners of Critics' Circle awards included Chiwetel Ejiofor and Patrick Stewart, who were jointly recognised for their performances as Othello and Macbeth respectively, and Anne-Marie Duff for her work in Saint Joan.
