Liverpool Airport 'first to harness wind power'

Liverpool Airport 'first to harness wind power'Liverpool Airport has claimed that it is the first air hub in the UK to install and operate wind turbines.

The base said that the initiative is part of its exploration of ways in which it can minimise its impact on the environment.

Two 15-metre-high, six-kilowatt turbines have been installed either side of Liverpool Airport's main approach road, which managers claimed provides a "dramatic gateway" to the hub that is visible to all passengers.

Each turbine generates enough electricity to power a standard four- to six-bedroom house.

The project is currently on a trial basis, to assess the effect of large turbines on sensitive air traffic control equipment, but could lead to the installation of more structures to boost sustainable power generation.

Andrew Dutton, Liverpool's environment manager, said: "The airport will continually look at ways to minimise the environmental impact of operating a growing regional airport.

"The wind turbines will potentially, along with other renewable energy sources, play an important part in the airport's future development."

Mr Dutton said that other airports across the UK could follow Liverpool's lead if the trial proves to be a success.
