EastEnders star plans a stay in Rent

Jessie Wallace, who played Kat Slater in EastEnders, is to star in West End musical Rent from December 24th this year.

The actress will take over the role of Maureen from another well known television personality, Denise Van Outen.

Wallace shot to fame playing the role of feisty ladette Kat in the BBC soap opera and has since appeared in television productions including A Class Apart and The Dinner Party.

Blood Brothers booking period extended

Blood Brothers, one of the West End's most popular and successful musicals, has had its booking period lengthened to enable viewers to see the show throughout 2008.

The extended run will see the show continue to entertain crowds at the Phoenix Theatre until November next year.

Blood Brothers is something of an anomaly in the West End, as it is the only long-running musical to have flopped before becoming a major hit.

Stars return to Chicago

Popular West End production Chicago is set to undergo a number of cast changes and see number of stars return to the stage.

Among the performers to return to the show will be Duncan James, the former member of boy band Blue, who will play the part of Billy Flynn, the role that he filled between July and September this year.

Another star with a pop music connection – Brenda Edwards – will return to the stage to play Mama Morton, after making her West End debut in 2006, according to the London Theatre Guide.

Hairspray named best musical

West End show Hairspray, which is currently showing at the Shaftesbury Theatre, was named the best musical at the recent Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

The production, which has been brought to London following its successful run on Broadway, took the award ahead of stiff competition in the form of Parade and Fiddler on the Roof.

Hairspray features a number of top names from British entertainment, including Michael Ball, who plays Edna Turnblad, the mother of the main character, and Mel Smith as Wilbur Turnblad, the father of the family.

Woman in Black gets new cast to scare

A new cast has been confirmed for The Woman in Black, one of the West End's longest running shows.

The spooky production will from December 3rd star Sean Baker and Ben Porter in place of Michael Burrell and Dominic Marsh.

A new booking period has also been confirmed for the play, meaning that theatregoers can reserve seats at the Fortune Theatre to watch the ghostly goings-on unfold until December 20th 2008.

Full cast confirmed for The Sea

The full cast has been confirmed for the upcoming production of Edward Bond's play The Sea.

Multi award-winning actress Eileen Atkins, who is currently on TV screens in BBC drama Cranford, will be one of the leading players in the show.

She will be joined by David Haig, who many audience members will recognise from his role in Four Weddings and a Funeral and sitcom The Thin Blue Line.
